Cryptids Coming to Lewiston

Bates College in Lewiston earned a rare honor on Monday: a plug on Boing Boing.

A website has been launched in support of an art exhibition to be held next year at the college's Museum of Art, titled Cryptozoology: Out Of Time Place Scale. The exhibition will "explore a pursuit where the disciplines of science and art share a mutual focal point, a desperately desired visual encounter." An encounter, that is, with the Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, Yeti, or any of the less celebrated crypto-critters thought to roam the earth.

A symposium on the subject will be held at the museum October 28-30. The keynote speaker will be Loren Coleman, whose International Cryptozoology Museum opened in Portland in 2003. (Click on the door of his Cabinet of Curiosities only if your constitution is sound.)

Update (Oct. 9, 2005): Coleman plans to unveil details soon of "a $1 million bounty to encourage the public to assist in the safe capture of a Bigfoot, Yeti, Lake Monster, Sea Serpent, or other cryptozoological specimen."

Update (Oct. 18, 2005): The $1 million offer has been rescinded out of concern for Bigfoot's safety, but the sponsor is still awarding prizes up to $5,000 for "the photo that best perpetuates the mystique surrounding the hunt for the legendary creatures Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster and/or Yeti."
