Tour a Maine Treasure

The famous "Wedding Cake House" in Kennebunk is open to the public for a limited time (and is featured in the current issue of the Kennebunk Post). Owners Jimmy Barker and Kenneth Douglas, Jr., will be charging $15 per visitor, with proceeds going to support victims of Hurricane Katrina. The doors will be open from 9:30 to 4 each day until October 22.

The 1826 Federal-style house was adorned with ornate trim in 1855 by its original owner, George W. Bourne, and is probably the most photographed house in Maine (Stephen King's is perhaps a close second). It was featured in the Historic American Buildings Survey in the late 1960s. Black-and-white photographs of the house, architectural drawings of the fence and gate, and an historical account of the buildings and features of the property are included in survey materials available online.
